New opportunities in South Korea’s offshore wind sector

May 11, 2024

Despite having the capacity for up to 18GW of offshore wind capacity, renewable energy currently provides just 5% of South Korea’s power. This is all set to change in 2024 and beyond, as the Green New Deal comes into play.

This deal was introduced by former president Moon in 2020 and promises to transform South Korea’s economy from one of the most carbon-intensive economies in the world into a net zero powerhouse by the year 2050.

How exactly will they achieve this goal? The government has pledged over 9 trillion won to renewables deployment and has set a target of 14.3GW of offshore wind power generation. This would transform South Korea into one of the nations leading the renewable energy transition throughout Asia, paving the way for others to follow suit.

This is not just about creating a greener economy. It will also create around 120,000 jobs, many of which will need to be filled by overseas nationals. The resources will be concentrated in the North and South Jeolla regions, where offshore wind capacity is greatest.

Many of the vacancies available will be in planning and strategic roles. This will evolve into pre-construction advisory positions as the plans ramp up. Companies in the region will also be looking for structural engineers, grid specialists, project managers and other highly technical roles to make this rollout a reality.
