Renewed confidence amongst UK hirers in 2020
New data from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation shows that businesses have become more confident in hiring new staff. The Jobs Outlook Survey for January 2020 demonstrates that there has been a significant increase in hiring activity from businesses.
Nolan Director Sean Neary definitely echoes these findings. “As a specialist within the Engineering & Technical sectors we have seen a huge uplift in hiring activity amongst our clients. January 2020 was a record month for us since our formation 4 years ago. Further clarity surrounding Brexit seems to have given clients much more confidence to increase their headcount in order to grow their business further”
Are Engineering companies worried about permanent staff shortages?
According to the same survey, 45% of companies within the Engineering & Technical sectors are worried about a shortage of permanent staff. It’s quite alarming that almost 1 in 2 engineering companies in the UK are concerned about not having the staff to deliver their objectives. Engineering is amongst the top 3 industries for skills shortages in the UK, the others being Health & Social Care and Construction.
What can you do to ensure you remain or become a “hirer of choice” for candidates?
From a business ownership perspective, a candidate led market certainly isn’t desirable. However, whether you like that or not, it is the reality and it’s important to accept this. The best candidates will have multiple opportunities to choose from so you need to stand out from the crowd. Continue to offer a mediocre salary and benefits package, and you will continue to attract mediocre candidates and likely suffer high staff turnover levels. The businesses we have seen really flourish in this environment are the ones that embrace the situation we are in and try their best to ensure they become an employer of choice.
Here at Nolan we love working with our clients to make them stand out from the competition.
From a candidate perspective, there hasn’t been a better time to look for that next move. But beware, the grass isn’t always greener! It’s best to fully assess the benefits and negatives of your current role and weigh up if you are serious about moving. Have you just had a bad day or are there ongoing issues that can’t be rectified?
We are certainly excited about the year ahead here at Nolan. If you wish to discuss your hiring options or perhaps as a candidate you want to discuss your next move, get in touch with us today on 01565 748 090
